Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Windows Systems Administrator to work in a dynamic environment, designing, deploying and supporting systems that form part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure. Responsibilities include ongoing support of Microsoft Windows servers and services, together with the design and implementation of new systems to meet business needs.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

*Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

Assisting in the design and implementation of new systems and system upgrades, including:

  • Installation and configuration of server-side application software, including integration with existing systems.
  • Liaising with third party software providers and systems integrators.
  • Making use of automation technologies where applicable.
  • Documenting system installation, upgrade and operational procedures.

Providing operational support for a large and diverse estate of Windows Servers, including:

  • Responding to automated monitoring alerts.
  • Undertaking investigations when issues are reported to the team.
  • Performing periodic system checks, proactively identifying potential future issues, following through to resolution.
  • Working with SMEs in other teams to assist in the diagnosis of complex problems.

Investigating new technologies for potential implementation in response to business needs.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have:

  • Windows deployment and administration skills.
  • Experience supporting an Active Directory environment.
  • An understanding of system security and how deploy new systems in accordance with sound security practice.
  • An IT qualification or equivalent accreditations.

The following skills would be beneficial:

  • Scripting to an intermediate level using Microsoft PowerShell or .NET technologies.
  • DevOps experience (e.g. Microsoft DSC, Ansible, Source Control, CI/CD, REST APIs)
  • Experience of any of the following Microsoft technologies: Active Directory, Federation Services, Certificate Services or SharePoint.

The successful candidate will be able to work as a member of a team of Windows administrators performing a variety of tasks from performing daily system support to delivery of new business projects and applications.  As a member of the team, you will be expected to participate in a compensated Out of Hours standby working arrangement and may be required to work overtime. As the team supports multiple WPD sites, a driving licence is required.
