Job Introduction

The Control Systems team are looking for a person to join an apprenticeship scheme that will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to begin an exciting career. The team are key players in shaping the strategy for becoming a Distribution System Operator.

They are responsible for management, functionality and development of all real time computer systems used to manage the electricity networks. Effective liaison with internal customers and external contractors, at a variety of management levels, is a key part of delivering these services so the ability to communicate clearly and build relationships is also very important.

The role will involve maintaining and updating the control systems and supporting other teams with updating the network along with administration and database management. You will get involved in projects to implement innovation such as low carbon solutions. Of course it is essential to keep our network secure so we also implement and maintain cyber security practices.

       Have a keen interest in current and new technology, experience in coding, databases, CAD and control systems will help but all can be learned on the job if not.

·       Work well within a team but also be highly self-sufficient and good at problem solving

·      The majority of the job role is office based but there are opportunities to travel throughout the company and across the UK to gain exposure to all aspects of what we do to succeed.        

·         Be willing to work towards achieving a technology based degree as part of the  apprenticeship.

·       Flexible, intuitive and ready to learn.

Successful candidates will have at least or expect to achieve two ‘A’ levels at grades A* - D, one of which must be in the following subjects:

Mathematics, Physics, ICT, Computing or Design and Technology.

Alternatively, relevant Level 3 or Level 4 qualifications will be considered. Please ensure that you provide details of your qualifications within your application form and be prepared to provide proof of these qualifications upon request.

Training will be provided over a period of approximately four years. It will be a mix of on-the-job and formal courses held in our Training Centre at Taunton and other institutions as appropriate. Successful candidates will also be expected to study for and achieve a BSc (Hons) Degree in Digital and Technology Solutions. Annual salary increments will be awarded.

The majority of on-the-job training will take place within local teams, but you will be required to undertake placements at other locations across the WPD service area, so you will need to be flexible and able to travel.
